It Started with a Bad Night’s Sleep

If you’ve ever woken up in the back of your SUV with a sore back, a crick in your neck, or freezing toes despite layering up—you’re not alone. That was us, too.

Like many outdoor lovers, we craved the freedom of the road: national parks, remote trailheads, cozy weekend getaways in the wild. But after each trip, we came back stiff, exhausted, and honestly, a little frustrated. Sleeping in your car should feel like an adventure—not like surviving a night on a concrete slab.

And that’s when we asked: Why isn’t there a mattress that actually lets you sleep well in your car?

The Problem We Wanted to Solve

Most camping mattresses are made for tents, not cars. They’re narrow, bouncy, cold, and uncomfortable. Foam toppers don’t fit the car shape. Air mattresses lose firmness and squeak all night. Worst of all? You end up waking up every hour, rolling to find “the least bad” position.

We didn’t want to survive the night—we wanted to rest.

So we started Havnby with one goal:

To make car camping feel like sleeping in your own bed.

Crafting Sleep with Intention

We didn’t rush to market. We spent over a year testing materials, experimenting with shapes, talking to fellow travelers and Tesla campers on Reddit and YouTube. What came out of that journey was our first product: the Tesla Model Y 4.5” Foam Mattress.

Why foam over air? Because foam gives you real support. It’s quiet. It conforms. It doesn’t deflate. And because we designed it to fit the car exactly, it gives a flat, even surface from the trunk to the back of the front seats. No dips. No awkward gaps.

From there, we expanded into other models—like the RAV4 Mattress and the CR-V Foam Mattress—each tailored to fit the vehicle like a glove.
